Sikkim CM Tamang stated that his government remains steadfast in its commitment to the cause.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah today assured a delegation of representatives of the 12 communities in Sikkim seeking ST status led by Chief Minister PS Tamang that the Centre would examine the matter thoroughly and necessary correspondence would be done.
The delegation handed over a memorandum to the Union Home Minister, highlighting the historical significance behind the demands put forward.
CM Tamang stated that his government remains steadfast in its commitment to the cause and will strive to achieve and fulfil the aspirations of the people of Sikkim.
Chief Minister Tamang’s visit to meet Home Minister Shah comes after he met and interacted with the executive members of the party level committee for Limboo-Tamang seat reservation in Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Sikkim Tamang Buddhist Association, and Sikkim Yakthung Sapsok Songjhumbo on December 1. RB Subba, former Minister, and Chairpersons and Advisors from the Limboo-Tamang community were also present in the meeting at his official residence in Mintokgang.
During the meeting the Chief Minister had a thorough discussion on the matter of seat reservation for the Limboo-Tamang community in the State Legislative Assembly, where he assured them that his government would submit their demands to the Centre in the days to come.
Worth mentioning that various groups and organisations representing both the communities have been pushing for 6 separate Limboo Tamang tribal seats in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.
On September 22, 2018, Law Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha, had presented a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sikkim requesting for his insights in resolving the issue. This letter implored the Prime Minister to offer assistance in resolving the issue of LT seat reservation.
In case of the 12 communities, they are seeking that the rights and interests of the indigenous left-out communities of Sikkim be restored by granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status as guaranteed in Article 371F of the Indian Constitution.
The 12 communities of Sikkim seeking tribal status are Bhujel, Gurung, Mangar, Newar, Jogi, Khas, Rai, Sunuwar, Giri-Sanyasi, Thami, Dewan and Majhi.
