Landslide Sweeps Away Indian Army Camp in Sikkim. 3 Bodies Recovered, Lt. Col, his Retd Squadron Leader Wife and Daughter Among The 6 Missing

Landslide Sweeps Sikim Army Camp: Indian Army has expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the brave hearts who lost their lives.

Tragedy struck an Indian Army camp located in Chaten in the forward area in Mangan District of North Sikkim when a devastating landslide swept away the camp on Sunday night.

Bodies of three people – two jawans —Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur and civilian Abhishek Lakhada, a porter, have been retrieved from the debris. Four individuals were rescued with minor injuries.

But, 6 people – Lt Col Pritpal Sandhu (GSO-I), his wife, Sqn Ldr (Retd) Arati B Sandhu and their daughter Amaira Sandhu, Subedar Dharamveer, Sepoy Sainudheen PK and Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary are missing.
Rescue teams are relentlessly working round-the-clock under extremely challenging conditions to locate and rescue the six personnel.

It was around 7 PM on Sunday evening. It was raining heavily and most of the people in the camp were indoors. Suddenly there was a huge noise and the ground shook, a catastrophic landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, struck the Chaten military camp and caught everyone unaware and there was commotion.

It is only in the morning today with daylight that the magnitude of the devastation could be seen.
An entire mountain on which the military camp sat was ravaged. This is clearly evident from the photographs shared by Indian Army. The Indian Army promptly initiated rescue operations in the inclement weather.

The Indian Army has expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the brave hearts who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. Every effort is being made to provide necessary support to the bereaved families in this hour of grief. More details on the search and rescue operation is awaited.
