Meghalaya's Warjri was also the only representative from the entire Northeast to be selected for the 38-member national expedition team.
Meghalaya government has honoured Refiness Warjri, the youngest woman from the state to scale Mount Everest, with a Rs 6 lakh reward. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took to social media platform X to announce the reward as he praised Warjri’s remarkable achievement.
“Today we honored Refiness Warjri for her remarkable feat of scaling Mount Everest by handing over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh from the Sports Department. Will be giving her another Rs 5 lakh from the CM’s Special Grant… We are in awe of her tenacity and courage. Kudos, Glory!” wrote the Chief Minister.
Refiness Warjri, affectionately known as “Glory,” is a 20-year-old NCC cadet from the 61 Meghalaya Girls Battalion and a B.Sc Botany student at St. Anthony’s College, Shillong. She made history by summiting the 8,848.86-metre-high Mount Everest on May 18 at 4:45 am, becoming the youngest and third woman from Meghalaya to achieve the feat.
Warjri, the third of five children of Shlurbor Kharmyndai and Diamondsea Warjri, received a warm welcome upon her arrival at Umroi Airport on Saturday, where she was greeted by her family and NCC colleagues.
She was also the only representative from the entire Northeast to be selected for the 38-member national expedition team. Before Everest, she had successfully climbed Mount Abi Gamin (7,355 meters) in Uttarakhand in August 2024.
Earlier Everesters from Meghalaya include Gary Jarman Lamare (2012), Wansuk Myrthong (2013), and Dolyne Kharbhih (2016). Refiness Warjri now joins this elite group, bringing pride and inspiration to the state.
