In a landmark decision to bolster conservation, the Assam Cabinet has approved the sixth expansion of Kaziranga National Park, adding 47,306.33 hectares to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Announced on May 21, 2025, this extension aims to enhance biodiversity protection and promote eco-friendly tourism in the region.
According to the official statement posted by CMO Assam on X, “The #AssamCabinet has approved the expansion of Kaziranga National Park by over 47,000 hectares under its sixth extension. This move aims to strengthen biodiversity conservation efforts and promote sustainable tourism at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.”
Several villages, including Gopal Jarani, Biswanath Ghat, Gonaitapu, Umatamoni, Jobre, Gakhirkimite, Thute Chapori, Silghat, Baligaon, and Hatimura, have been excluded from the expansion zone.
This strategic move reinforces Assam’s commitment to environmental protection while balancing the needs of local communities and tourism development.
