Karnataka School Shut, Owner and Hostel Warden Arrested After 2 Meghalaya Students Die Due to Food Poising

Two Meghalaya students- Sunday Kerlang and Nyamo Banti died, while 29 other students remain hospitalised due to severe food poisoning

In a major development following the tragic food poisoning incident that claimed the lives of two Meghalaya students in Karnataka, the owner of the school and the hostel warden have been arrested, confirmed Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Moreover, the school, located in Karnataka’s Mandya district, has also been shut down as authorities investigate the case.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated that strict action is being taken against those responsible for the incident. A special team from Meghalaya consisting – P. Sunn, Sub Inspector of Schools, Subdivisional School Education Officer, Shillong, and R. Kharsyntiew, District MIS, PM-POSHAN, Shillong has been closely monitoring the condition of the ailing students, ensuring that they receive proper medical attention and efforts are also underway to bring them back home safely.

“The owner of the School, the Hostel warden have been arrested and the School in Mandya District, Karnataka has been closed following the food poisoning incident leading to the unfortunate demise of two young boys and hospitalizing other children from Meghalaya with severe illness. We are making all efforts to bring the children back home,” CM Sangma tweeted.


Two Meghalaya students Die in Karnataka Due to Food Poisoning

Sunday Kerlang and Nyamo Banti, both 13-year-old died after reportedly consuming leftover food prepared for Holi celebrations at an unauthorized hostel of the Gokul Educational Institution’s residential school in T Kagepura village in Mandya, Karnataka.

The incident came to light on March 16.

Sunday Kerlang, a Class VII student hailing from Lyndem village under Pynursla Civil Subdivision died on Sunday, while Nyamo Banti died today. Meanwhile, 29 other students remain hospitalised due to severe food poisoning.

Meghalaya CM has extended an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh to the family members of the deceased.
The Gokul Educational Institution’s residential school has been operating without a licence since 1989. The school was illegally housing students on the first floor of the building without proper hostel facilities, including toilets.
