Justice B R Gavai on Manipur Crisis: ‘All Problems Can Be Solved Through Constitutional Means’

Following their visit and interactions with people affected by the conflict, the team is set to leave Manipur later today.
Supreme Court judge and Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, Justice B R Gavai, has assured the people of Manipur that all problems, including the ongoing ethnic crisis, can be resolved through constitutional mechanisms. Stressing the importance of dialogue, he stated that when discussions take place, a solution is always within reach.
Justice Gavai made these remarks while addressing the 12th Foundation Day celebration of the Manipur High Court. He led a team of five Supreme Court judges on a two-day visit to Manipur to interact with those affected by the ethnic violence.
He said that the people suffering due to the prolonged conflict want peace and stability. The delegation visited relief camps in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, where they met internally displaced persons. He observed that those in relief camps are eager to return home and expressed hope that with collective efforts, peace and normalcy can soon be restored.
“Everything can be resolved through constitutional means. If there is dialogue, a solution will not be far away. The people in relief camps want to return home. I am confident that with the governor’s efforts, peace and normalcy will soon return to Manipur,” Justice Gavai said.
During their visit, the judges also paid tribute to a revered national hero and acknowledged Manipur as one of the most beautiful states in India. Justice Gavai highlighted that Manipur, despite having one of the youngest high courts in the country, has already sent a judge to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court delegation, which included Justices Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Viswanathan, and N. Kotiswar Singh, also virtually inaugurated a legal services camp, a medical camp, and a legal aid clinic from the Mini Secretariat at Lamka in Churachandpur district.
Following their visit and interactions with people affected by the conflict, the team is set to leave Manipur later today.
