‘It’s Like a Meeting Without Knowing the Subject’: Mukul Sangma Rips Into Railway Committee Formation

Mukul said that involving political leaders at the initial stage is essential to build consensus and avoid future unrest.
Meghalaya Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has come down heavily on the Conrad K Sangma-led government for forming a committee on the proposed railway projects in Meghalaya without first engaging with political parties.
“It’s like going to a meeting without knowing the subject,” Dr Mukul Sangma said while addressing the media. “The Chief Minister should first call all political party leaders before forming any committee.”
Dr Mukul Sangma argued that bypassing political consultation weakens the democratic process and risks ignoring key concerns raised by various groups. He said that involving political leaders at the initial stage is essential to build consensus and avoid future unrest.
“You cannot just jump into stakeholder discussions through a committee without first holding an all-party meeting,” he said. “Talk to political parties, committee members, and all stakeholders, only then will you get a clearer, balanced understanding.”
The veteran leader stressed that public fears over influx and protection of indigenous rights must not be brushed aside. He said the government’s committee-first approach could derail the process of finding meaningful and sustainable solutions.
“We must go step by step. First, understand what is actually possible by discussing it thoroughly with political representatives,” he said.
Dr Mukul Sangma reiterated that committee-level discussions cannot substitute for political consensus. He warned that skipping this vital step risks deepening public mistrust and creating more complications around the railway project.
