Is Another GLOF Ticking in Sikkim? South Lhonak Lake Once Again Placed in Highest Risk Category

The lake has now refilled to the same dangerous level, raising serious concerns
Is the Himalayan state of Sikkim heading towards another Glacial Lake Outburst Flood and at the same South Lhonak Lake where a GLOF in 2023 caused massive devastation in the state? Recent study by scientists has brought out an alarming report stating that the Lake has once again been placed in the highest risk category.
South Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim is once again at risk. After 2023 GLOF, the water level had dropped by 24 meters. However, the lake has now refilled to the same dangerous level, raising serious concerns.
Talking to Northeast Live, the Principal Director and Secretary of the Science and Technology Department of Sikkim, D.G. Shresta stated that the lake has been placed in the highest risk category along with 15 other glacial lakes in Sikkim. Out of the 16 high-risk lakes, 3 are located in West Sikkim and the rest are in the North.
Taking into consideration the high risk factor and to avoid future disasters, the Sikkim government has formed a 13-member High-Level Commission on Glacial Hazards. This step is part of the government’s efforts to better monitor and manage glacial lakes, particularly after the devastating GLOF in 2023. The state is now focusing on taking preventive steps to protect lives and property from similar future threats.
It may be noted that on the night of 4 October 2023, Sikkim experienced a devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) triggered by a landslide into South Lhonak Lake. This event caused a massive surge of water down the Teesta River, leading to widespread damage, loss of life, and infrastructure destruction. At least 55 people were killed, and 70 were reported missing.
The floodwaters caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydropower projects, particularly the Teesta III dam.
Many homes were washed away, and communities were severely impacted. Downstream areas in West Bengal and Bangladesh were also affected.
The disaster underscored the growing threat of GLOFs in the Himalayas due to glacial melt and climate change.
The event has prompted investigations and calls for better risk management and mitigation strategies for GLOFs in the region.
