VC Shukla has gone on leave after the students’s protests intensified and the Meghalaya government stepped in.
After meeting with the inquiry committee members to investigate allegations against North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prabha Shankar Shukla, NEHU community said that irrespective of inquiry outcome Vice Chancellor Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla won’t allowed to enter the campus.
The two-member inquiry commission, set up by the Central Government to investigate allegations against VC Shukla engaged in discussions with members of the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) today. The commission, led by Professor D.P. Singh, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), included Professor Dilip Chandra Nath, former VC of Assam University.
Speaking to media, Prof. Lakhon Kma, President of NEHU Teachers’ Association, termed the meeting with the committee as fruitful. “We presented the key issues concerning the NEHU community and hope the committee understands the gravity of the situation. They’ve seen the evidence and will inspect things on the ground,” he stated.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the VC’s tenure, Prof. Kma remarked, “We are unanimously demanding his removal. Regardless of the inquiry’s outcome, his return as VC is unacceptable. He has been detrimental to NEHU’s progress, starting from recruitment processes and denying rightful candidates their positions as deans. His actions have drained the university of its dignity.”
Prof. Kma also expressed dismay at the lack of connection between the VC and the university’s culture and state. “He has no attachment to NEHU or Meghalaya. His actions have brought the university to its lowest point. The committee members, being from academic backgrounds, will likely understand our concerns after their inspection. Their recommendations will reveal whether the committee is biased or unbiased,” he added.
NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun stating that the students have clearly communicated their stance to the inquiry committee. “We remain hopeful for a positive response. We presented detailed evidence of the VC’s actions over the last three years, including his failure to uphold responsibilities, the decline in the university’s rankings, and the deteriorating infrastructure,” Sohtun said.
He further said, “Our message to the commission is clear, Prof. Shukla is not welcome at NEHU. We will continue our agitation until a resolution is reached. Classes will remain suspended for now.”
