IOC LPG cylinder transporters go on indefinite strike in Assam, supplies may be hit

LPG bottling plants in North Guwahati, Tinsukia, Mirza, Gopanari, Sarpara, Bongaigaon, Dimapur, Silchar and Duliajan shut down in support of the strike.

Locals in Assam are likely to face a shortage of LPG cylinders in the coming days as LPG transporters across the state went on an indefinite strike on Wednesday.

The proposed strike is also likely to hit supplies in the neighbouring northeastern states.

The decision to go on strike and shut down plants came after a meeting between Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the North East Packed LPG Transporter Association (NEPLTA), called by the Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs Department of Assam, failed.

As per inputs, the Northeast Packed LPG Transporter Association (NEPLTA) has alleged that their long-pending demands, mostly related to pending dues and low rates in the tenders have been ignored by IOCL, despite several meetings with IOCL officials.

From Wednesday morning, hundreds of trucks were seen lined up outside the bottling plants across Assam, but the vehicles did not enter the factories and load the cylinders meant for distribution among the dealers.

LPG plants in North Guwahati, Tinsukia, Mirza, Gopanari, Sarpara, Bongaigaon, Dimapur, Silchar and Duliajan also shut down in support of the strike.

On Tuesday, the state government called NEPLTA to talk about the demands. Earlier on January 5, the association had also written to the chief secretary, flagging the same issues and urged him to take necessary steps.
