Tourist Missing in Meghalaya: Meghalaya Minister & BJP leader A.L. Hek visited Sohra today and took stock of the search and rescue operation.

The case of the newly-wed couple from Indore who had gone missing in Meghalaya and remains untraced for 6th day today has now become not just a high- profile case but also a prestige issue for the BJP in the state.

A day after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed deep concern over the disappearance of couple, calling the incident extremely shocking, top BJP leaders from Madhya Pradesh have reached out to their counterparts in Meghalaya requesting them to take up the case in right earnest and ensure that the probe being conducted by Meghalaya Police is on the right track and is being conducted in a manner that would help trace the newly-wed missing couple who had come to Meghalaya on May 22 for their honeymoon and has been missing since May 23.

Following the request from Madhya Pradesh BJP, Meghalaya Minister and BJP leader A.L. Hek visited Sohra today and took stock of the search and rescue operation. He reviewed the deployment of K9 units, drones, and SOT personnel, as well as the extended search areas. Minister Hek emphasized the urgency of a thorough and expedited search to locate the missing couple.

As per the briefing received by Minister Hek, the couple, on May 22, arrived at Mawlakhiat village on a rented scooty to visit the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat. They engaged a local guide and stayed overnight at Shipara Homestay in Nongriat. They checked out at 06:00 on the May 23 intending to return to Mawlakhiat.

No confirmed sightings of the couple trekking from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat or retrieving their scooty from the Mawlakhiat parking lot were reported, despite heavy tourist activity.

On May24, at 9:00 pm, the Sordar of Sohrarim reported an abandoned scooty, traced to the couple via E-Challan on 25 May at 2:30 pm. The same day, an FIR was filed by relatives was registered.

The couple left their luggage at the Homestay, in Sohra. The luggage has been opened along with the relatives but revealed no clues.

As of today, three search and rescue teams, supported by K9 units, drones from NESAC, and Special Operations Team personnel, have been deployed to Nongriat-Pyndemdkhar-Mawlakhiat Mawsahew-Wahkaliar Weisawdong.

The search will now be extended to the gorges along Mawkdok, Umdiengpoh, and up to Sohra Rim along the Shillong-Sohra Road. Local communities are also being canvassed for witness reports and Block Development Officers have been asked to instruct all field staff to do the same. Briefing to Hon’ble Minister

Earlier, a worried and anxious Vipin Raghuvanshi, brother of Raja Raghuvanshi who is now in Shillong raised a few pertinent points and questioned the investigation being conducted by Meghalaya Police.
Vipin Raghuvanshi said that the scooty rented by the couple had GPS. The renter knew about the couple’s whereabouts. Why are police not questioning him properly? He also asked why are the Police not questioning the guide? Is the hotel management hiding something? Why did the couple who served coffee and banana to the missing couple first say they have not seen the couple and then changed their statement later?
Vipin said he doubted the person who rented the scooty, the guide, the homestay manager and the couple who served coffee and banana to his brother and sister-in-law.

“They were both wearing gold chains and rings and diamond bracelets. They both carried four mobile phones and power banks. How can all four mobile phones be switched off at the same time? The authorities said there was no electricity in the area for 13 days. My question is, how was the coffee machine working?”, Vipin told reporters in Shillong.

Now questions are being asked if Meghalaya Police is being lax and why is Meghalaya Police Going easy on the person who rented the scooty to the couple, the hotel manager and the guide?

Thirty-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi and his 27-year-old wife Sonam had tied the knot on May 11 and had picked Meghalaya, the abode of clouds, known for its cool climate and picturesque landscapes for their honeymoon. Just 12 days after tying the knot, the couple went missing.

This is not the first time that tourists have gone missing in Meghalaya. Just last month in April, Hungarian tourist Puskas Zsolt had gone missing in the same district. His body was found 12 days later near Ramdait village.
