These advanced materials are set to replace traditional building materials in the construction of bunkers in high-altitude areas.

In a landmark move towards innovation and self-reliance, the Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati for the research, design, and fabrication of epoxy bamboo-based composites.

These advanced materials are set to replace traditional building materials in the construction of bunkers in high-altitude areas.

The initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency by developing lightweight yet durable composite panels.

These panels will undergo rigorous field trials, including exposure to small arms fire and extreme weather conditions, to assess their viability for military use.

The reduced weight of these structures will significantly ease logistics, cutting down the effort and time required for transportation while enhancing force preservation.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Major General Rohin Bawa, YSM, GOC, Red Horns Division, and Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati.

This collaboration aligns with the Chief of the Army Staff’s vision of the “Decade of Transformation”, reinforcing the Indian Army’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies into its defence infrastructure.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the initiative, Major General Bawa emphasised the Army’s focus on leveraging niche technologies and fostering collaborations between academia, industry, researchers, and start-ups. He reiterated that this MoU embodies a “whole-of-nation” approach, driving technological progress while contributing to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative.

This partnership goes beyond a formal agreement. It represents a shared vision to push the boundaries of technological advancements and enhance India’s defence capabilities in challenging terrains.
