“Discussions and dialogues will be held every two months so that there is early resolution and solution to our genuine demands”, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma

Six months after the signing of the historic Tiprasa Accord for the protection of land, economic and constitutional rights of the Tiprasa people of Tripura, the first meeting of the Joint Working Group for the proper implementation of the Accord was held in New Delhi today.

Tripura Royal Scion and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma informed Northeast Live that the meeting was extremely positive and it was decided that the Joint Working Group will sit every two months to carry forward what will be a structured discussion.

Additionally, a decision has been taken to develop a comprehensive framework aimed at addressing the genuine concerns of the Tiprasa people, who have endured hardships for the past 75 years.

Tipra Motha leaders also submitted a memorandum to Convenor of the Joint Working Group AK Mishra.

“There are many things which have been discussed in the meeting. We had decided to frame an entire structure so that the genuine concerns of the Tiprasa people who have suffered for 75 years are addressed. Our land rights, economic rights, constitutional rights, our culture, our language and many other things were discussed. We have also submitted a memorandum,” said Pradyot Debbarma.

“Today we have not spoken as a political party or politicians but we have spoken as indigenous people. All three parties (Tipra Motha leaders, Tripura Government Representatives and Representatives from Centre) have agreed that unlike before we will meet for discussions and dialogues every two months and the next meeting will be in November. It is very important that we fix and have regular meetings so that there is early resolution and solution to our genuine demands. There are many things happening in Bangladesh and we have to be very concerned as Tripura being a border state, our people are protected, our rights are permanent and our land is secure,” Debbarma added.

Debbarma said, “The next generation should have a chance of a better tomorrow, and that can only happen if we hear, respect and understand. This is a test match, not a 20-20 match. This is a long solution, it will require time, patience, learned discussion and talk rather than fights.”

Joining Debbarma at the discussions was TIPRA Motha president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl, who is also a member of the six-member committee.

Four other representatives including two Tripura government officials and Centre’s representative and Advisor Northeast, Ministry of Home Affairs, AK Mishra and another official from the Centre.

It may be mentioned that the Tiprasa Accord was signed on March 2, 2024.

Prior to the first meeting of the Joint Working Group, Debbarma had urged his supporters and the people of Tripura to brace for long-drawn discussions and said that the issue will not be resolved in a day.
