ILP is Non-Negotiable Mechanism for Meghalaya’s Safety, Easier than MRSSA: VPP

ILP is more practical and easier to implement than the MRSSA

The Voice of People Party (VPP) on Thursday stated that the Inner Line Permit (ILP) is easier to implement than Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

Talking to Northeast Live, VPP Spokesperson, Batskhem Myrboh said that the ILP is more practical and easier to implement than the MRSSA. Myrboh said that ILP is more targeted, streamlined, and less burdensome on local citizens and authorities.

Myrboh said,”MRSSA affects both locals and outsiders, requires burdensome documentation, and puts pressure on local durbars. ILP, on the other hand, is specific to visitors and more precise in application,”
In the wake of recent concerns over tourist safety following the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, Myrboh emphasized the urgent need for a robust regulatory mechanism to govern tourism and external inflow, reiterating the VPP’s long-standing demand for ILP in Meghalaya.

Myrboh said, “Despite its potential, Meghalaya’s tourism sector lacks basic infrastructure like CCTV cameras, electricity, and proper vehicle/visitor registration at tourist spots.”
Myrboh further said that tourism in the state must be regulated to protect both ecology and safety while warning against measuring success merely by tourist footfall. “We cannot afford mass tourism in Meghalaya. It must be balanced with our fragile environment,” said Myrboh

Myrboh reiterated that ILP is essential not just for the safety of locals, but also for visitors. Myrboh said,”It’s a mechanism that benefits all. The recent crime shows the loopholes in tracking outsiders.”
Dismissing concerns that ILP would hamper tourism, Myrboh likened ILP to booking a flight: “With online systems, it’s not a barrier. Arguing otherwise is lazy and baseless in the digital age”, said Myrboh.

Myrboh added that though VPP might have just one MP in Parliament, but VPP is committed to pursuing the ILP demand at the national level.

Myrboh affirmed that ILP is a non-negotiable mechanism for Meghalaya’s safety, sustainability, and sovereignty, and the VPP would continue to advocate for its implementation through all democratic avenues.
