Nearly a month after a massive landslide devastated the Chaten area in Mangan district of Sikkim that swept away an Army camp including an Army Lt. Colonel, his retired squadron leader wife and daughter and four other soldiers, search teams have recovered human bone fragments from the affected zone.
The discovery was made on July 2, during an ongoing search operation linked to the Lachen Police Station Unnatural Death case dated June 2, registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS).
While the bodies of Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh and Lance Naik Munish Thakur were found and a headless body of a woman was found, the Lt. Col with his family, Sepoy Sainudheen PK and Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary remained missing.
Search teams found two bone fragments near the bank of the Teesta River, around 700 feet below the road in the landslide-hit area. One bone piece measures approximately 13 cm, while the other is about 5 cm long.
Officials immediately completed all necessary legal procedures at the site. An inquest was carried out in the presence of independent witnesses to ensure transparency. The recovered remains have been carefully packed and preserved at the Army Medical Inspection (MI) Room in Chaten.
The big question now is, does the bone fragments belong to the missing Army Lt. Col or Sepoy Sainudheen PK and Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary?
Authorities confirmed that the search operation is still underway, with teams continuing to look for missing persons or additional evidence from the disaster. Forensic experts will now analyse the bone fragments to help identify the deceased and bring closure to grieving families.
