Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Williamson Sangma Meghalaya State Museum today at the U Soso Tham Auditorium premises in Shillong in the presence of Tourism and Arts & Culture Minister Paul Lyngdoh.
The museum pays homage to the Hill State Movement and its pioneers, especially Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the state’s first Chief Minister. A commemorative postal stamp and a special cover was also released in his honour by India Post, and a new logo was unveiled for the Department of Arts and Culture.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sangma emphasised the museum’s broader purpose. “Our identity is rooted in our culture, language, textiles, food, music and traditions. This museum is not just a structure—it represents our concerted effort to preserve, document, and economically sustain our culture through a creative economy,” he said.
He highlighted the government’s integrated approach, noting that Minister Paul Lyngdoh holds the portfolios for Arts & Culture, Tourism, and Textiles, reflecting the interconnectedness of heritage, creativity, and livelihood. Sangma also stressed the importance of research, announcing support for researchers whose work will be published and made available to the public.
The government envisions the museum as a cornerstone in nurturing cultural tourism and a creative economy built on Meghalaya’s distinct identity. Also present at the inauguration were Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang and other dignitaries, marking a momentous step in the state’s journey to celebrate and sustain its unique heritage.
