HM Shah emphasised that by 2027, all Northeastern states will be connected by air and rail, boosting regional development.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday urged the last remaining insurgent groups in the Northeast to lay down arms and join the mainstream.

Speaking at the ‘Unity Utsav – One Voice, One Nation’ event organized by Assam Rifles in New Delhi, the Union Home Minister emphasised that by 2027, all Northeastern states will be connected by air and rail, boosting regional development.

He highlighted the progress made since 2014, stating that over 10,500 militants have surrendered, and 12 peace accords have been signed between 2019 and 2024. He credited the Narendra Modi-led government for resolving longstanding disputes and creating new opportunities for the region’s youth.

It may be mentioned here that in recent years, insurgency in northeast has seen a rapid decline, with a 70% reduction in insurgency incidents and an 80% drop in civilian deaths in 2019 compared to 2013.

Several key militant groups, including the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) in Manipur and United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) in Assam have signed peace agreements in recent years.

This marks a significant decline in active insurgency in the region. However, the precise number of individuals who have laid down arms remains unclear.

HM Amit Shah said 212 teams and 1,500 students participated in the sports competitions in the event and more than 150 students also took part in the cultural programmes.

Manipur emerged as the top performer in sports, reinforcing its reputation as a sporting powerhouse.

Acknowledging the region’s deep connection with sports, HM Shah recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to establish India’s first sports university in Manipur.

Expressing optimism about India’s future in global athletics, he predicted that the country would host the 2036 Olympics and secure a spot in the top 10, with the Northeast playing a crucial role in this achievement.
