Mizoram: The 51.38 km broad gauge line now connects Bairabi to Sairang, a town just 20 km from central Aizawl.

In a landmark moment for Mizoram, capital Aizawl is now connected by Railways and is now on the Railways map of India.

This expansion of infrastructure has been realised with the successful commissioning and safety clearance of the final stretch of the Bairabi–Sairang New Line Railway Project. The 51.38 km broad gauge line now connects Bairabi to Sairang, a town just 20 km from central Aizawl. The last 33.86 km section from Hortoki to Sairang was inspected and approved by Sumeet Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Northeast Frontier Circle, between June 6 and 10.

The CRS inspection included a detailed motor trolley and foot survey, followed by a high-speed trial run. The challenging hilly terrain of the Hortoki–Sairang section includes 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges, showcasing engineering excellence in one of India’s most remote regions. Following the successful trial, the section has been authorised for public operations at speeds up to 90 kmph.

The entire Bairabi–Sairang project is considered an engineering feat. Spanning 51.38 km, it includes 48 tunnels totalling over 12.8 kilometres in length, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, 5 road overbridges, and 6 road under-bridges. Notably, Bridge No. 196, at 104 meters high, stands 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar.

Divided into four segments—Bairabi–Hortoki, Hortoki–Kawnpui, Kawnpui–Mualkhang, and Mualkhang–Sairang, the project represents a transformative leap for Mizoram’s connectivity. It is expected to significantly boost both passenger and freight transportation, foster economic development, and fulfill a long-cherished aspiration of the people of Mizoram.

This development underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to integrating remote and strategically vital regions into the national transportation network.
