A Himalayan Black Bear was successfully caged on November 29 after a team of Sikkim forest guards and officials, and members of United Thathangchen Boys spent over 24 hours to capture the Himalayan Black Bear that was spotted near the Thathangchen palace in Gangtok.
The East Wildlife Division had installed the bear cage at upper reaches of Thathangchen. “United Thathangchen Boys extended all necessary help to carry the heavy cage along the steep village footpath. It was only due to their selfless help that Wildife was able to successfully install the heavy cage in a location which is at a considerable distance from the road head. A back-breaking, late night exercise and heartfelt thanks to all those who helped,” the East Wildlife Division said thanking everyone involved in the exercise.
Appearance of the Himalayan Black Bear is a common thing in north, west and eat Sikkim. Just two months back, a woman was injured by a Himalayan Black Bear in west Sikkim. In April 2021, one Himalayan Black Bear entered the BSNL office in Gangtok at around 5 AM and the guard on duty was injured.
The forest authorities managed to catch the bear after an arduous 11 hours. Every year the Himalayan Black Bear is spotted at least 2-3 times across Sikkim. There has been instances when the Himalayan Black Bear has been spotted near Raj Bhavan (Governor’s residence) in Gangtok.
