Highlander Brigade highlights Northeast India’s rich football heritage through graffiti

The much-awaited seventh season of the Indian Super League (ISL) is finally here with football fans across the country anticipating the top football league. But this year, the Covid pandemic has affected most sporting actions across the globe to be put on hold.

However, with slight relaxations, some events have resumed, the 7th season of the ISL will be held behind closed doors at 3 selected Stadiums in Goa.

In the Northeast, the Highlander Brigade which is the official fan group of Northeast United FC the ISL club representing Northeast, members of the fan club have decorated specific sites across the region with graffiti highlighting the rich football culture and heritage of the region.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Ivan Basumatary one of the founding members of the fan club said, even though the Highlander Brigades are not able to support NEUFC from the stands, still then they have been supporting the Club through their graffiti, social media, besides others.

Ivan added that people are not much aware of football torchbearers from the region, that is why they have painted murals of Dr T Ao the first National football captain who led the Indian contingent to the 1948 London Olympics, and Gilbertson Sangma another prominent footballer from Northeast.

Speaking on the current 7th season, the Highlander Brigade are excited to see the players as well as the new signings in action.

Northeast United FC and Mumbai City FC will be looking forward to a positive note this season as the two clubs lock horns at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco, Goa tonight.

The two sides, between them, have featured just thrice in the knockout stages so far. But this season, the two Spanish gaffers Gerard Nus and Sergio Lobera will go all out in the hope of changing the narrative.
