Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Tripura, South District on High Alert; CM Saha says Not to Panic

CM Manik Saha said that initiatives have already been taken to clear the blocked roads due to the falling trees uprooted due to heavy showers.

After causing havoc in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh, monsoon rains are rampaging through Tripura causing extensive damage to houses and road infrastructure since the downpour began yesterday.

Belonia in South Tripura district received 214.40 mm rainfall and Sabroom and Bagafa recorded 152.00 mm and 80.00 mm of rainfall respectively, Chief Minister Manik Saha said.

High alert has been sounded in South Tripura district and CM Saha is closely monitoring the situation.

CM Saha has sought reports from the Revenue Secretary and India Meteorological Department (IMD) Departments.

Water levels of Muhuri and Lawgang rivers are swelling. Presently, the water level of Muhuri is at 26.60 mtr, which has exceeded the flood level of 23.60 mtr but is still below the critical level of 27.50 mtr. The Lawgang is flowing at 24.50 mtr, which is above the danger level of 24.00 mtr.

Shelters have been made ready and preparations for precautionary evacuation have started.
“Action has been taken for the shifting of water-logged families from Belonia and Santirbazar urban areas. As reported, 6 houses have so far been partly damaged in Belonia Sub Division, & necessary support is being extended to the affected families,” said CM Saha.

He also said that initiatives have already been taken to clear the blocked roads due to the falling of trees due to heavy showers.

“Aapda Mitra & Civil Defence Volunteers, TSR, TSECL, Forest and other QRTs are on standby and will be pressed into action if the situation worsens. There is no need to panic; the administration is closely monitoring the overall situation and prepared to deal with any eventuality. We appeal to the people residing across the district to stay alert & contact the local administration in case of any emergency,” he added.
