Have Taken Note: Tripura CM On Bangladesh’s Embankment Building Threatening Families in State

Tripura CM assured the people that embankment construction on the Indian side is underway in vulnerable areas.
Amid rising concern of Bangladesh constructing embankments very close to the Indian border in Tripura and raising fears of floods that will destroy crop and homes of hundreds of families in the southern part of the state, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha today said that authorities have been informed and steps are being taken to address the matter.
“Regarding Kailashahar in Unakoti district, we have already taken steps. As for the Muhurichar area in Belonia, South Tripura, we have collected all required information and forwarded it to higher authorities for further action,” the CM said speaking at the inauguration of a school building in Amtali.
Dr Saha assured the people that embankment construction on the Indian side is underway in vulnerable areas, and he expressed hope that residents would not face any further hardship due to cross-border developments.
In Kailashahar, authorities had started the repair work of the embankment along the banks of the Manu river in areas like Vidyanagar, Durgapur, Sonamara, Govindpur, and the crematorium zone in Kailashahar, as well as rural areas like Safarkandi, Latiyapura, Rangaouti, and Maguruli, had commenced about a month ago after decades of neglect. But Bangladesh Border Guards objected and stopped the repair work thus leaving the people around that area in Tripura vulnerable to floods.
In Belonia, Bangladesh has started construction of an embankment along the Muhuri river raising fears of floods that could wash away at least 500 families.
The Opposition CPIM and Congress have strongly criticised the state government’s, alleged delay in acting and said that the government woke up only after the Opposition MLAs raised the issue. They argued that the state should have acted earlier, during the dry season, rather than after Bangladesh completed its embankment works near the border pillars.
With monsoons knocking at the doors, Opposition leaders have warned of the risk of severe flooding and reminded the public of the devastating floods experienced last year. They asserted that any resulting disaster this year would be the government’s responsibility.
Residents in low-lying border areas have also voiced concerns, fearing that delayed action could lead to rising water levels and widespread damage if preventive steps are not promptly implemented.
