Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong has informed that the State government would hopefully call the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) for a final meeting next month for discussion on resolving the issue pertaining to the relocation of 342 families of Sweepers’ Colony from Them Iew Mawlong before submitting the affidavit to the High Court of Meghalaya.
“The state government was meaning to hold a meeting with the Harijan Panchayat Committe, but due to festivities, we could not hold the meeting. Hopefully by next month, we will be able to call them and sit once and for all and we then we will submit the affidavit again to the High Court,” said Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
It may be noted here that in July this year, the Meghalaya High Court, hearing the matter of the proposed relocation of the 342 families of Harijan colony said that the issue has dragged on for ‘far too long’.
The court said that given the fact that the state and the stakeholders are trying to negotiate and amicably resolve the issue, the court’s interference is unwarranted.
The court asked the State government to file a report indicating the progress made, when the matter appears at the next hearing on November 8, 2023.
