Guwahati: Maa Kali Hotel shut after dead lizard found in food, hotel’s kitchen found close to a filthy toilet

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) today sealed the Maa Kali Hotel in city’s Paltan Bazar where a customer found a dead lizard in the food he was served.
On September 25, a man from Silchar found a dead lizard in the rice thali he had ordered in this popular hotel, which led to an altercation between the customer and the staff members of the hotel.
Following this, the man filed a complaint at the Paltan Bazar Police Station accusing the hotel of breaching hygiene standards and threatening public health.
A team of the GMC personnel, Food Safety officials and police today raided the Maa Kali Hotel. During the inspection, the hotel was found to be operating in an unhygienic manner putting public’s health at risk, said an official.
The official stated that the kitchen, where all meals are prepared, was found to be extremely dirty and attached to a toilet that is extremely unhygienic.
Since the hotel has violated the hygiene standards and compromised public health, the GMC sealed the hotel immediately.
The official also said that in the coming days, the GMC will inspect all such hotels and eateries operating near bus stops and railway stations and if any hotel found to be violating hygiene standards will be sealed.
