Guwahati Dentist Missing in Arunachal: 21 Days On, Search Continues; SIT Says Investigating All Angles

His personal belongings were later discovered intact inside his room, but there was no sign of him.

Three weeks after the mysterious disappearance of Dr. Debenjit Kumar Sharma, a Guwahati-based dentist, from Parshuram Kund in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district, the search continues with no significant breakthrough.

Dr. Sharma had embarked on a solo bike trip and was staying in a hut at a riverside resort near the Lohit River. On the morning of May 31, at around 8 a.m., he reportedly approached the resort staff to ask for tea—his last confirmed interaction. Shortly after, he was found to be missing. His personal belongings were later discovered intact inside his room, but there was no sign of him.

Later that day, at approximately 2 p.m., the hut where Dr. Sharma was lodged was washed away due to heavy rainfall and the rising waters of the Lohit River, intensifying fears of accidental drowning.

As first reported on June 3, authorities suspected that Dr. Sharma might have been swept away by the river. However, following a formal appeal by his family on June 12, which contested the drowning theory and sought a more comprehensive investigation, the Arunachal Pradesh government ordered a renewed and intensified search.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by DSP Maga Tago has since been constituted to handle the case.

Speaking to Northeast Live, DSP Tago said the team has thoroughly examined Call Detail Records (CDR) and mobile network activity, but so far, no suspicious activity has been detected.

“We are keeping all possibilities open—be it accidental drowning, foul play, extortion, or kidnapping. As of now, there’s no strong evidence pointing to any one theory, but our investigation remains active and ongoing,” DSP Tago said.

Following the failed attempt by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been redeployed for an intensified search. Authorities have also announced a cash reward for any credible information. Local fishermen and hunters downstream have been alerted to remain vigilant.

Despite these combined efforts, no trace of Dr. Sharma has been found as of today, making this one of the most baffling and concerning missing person cases in the region in recent times.
