18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju stunned reigning champion Ding Liren by clinching Game 3 at the World Chess Championship 2024 on Wednesday in Singapore. The victory not only leveled the score at 1.5-1.5 in the best-of-14 series but also earned the young prodigy an impressive pay cheque of Rs 1.68 crore, showcasing the immense financial stakes at the global chess arena.
As per the World Chess Championship 2024 regulations, set by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), each player receives $200,000 (Rs. 1.68 crore) for every game they win, including victories by forfeit. With Gukesh’s win in Game 3 and Ding’s earlier triumph in Game 1, both players have already pocketed significant sums.
The championship prize fund, totaling $2.5 million (approximately Rs. 20.8 crore), will ultimately be divided between the players. If one of them wins outright by reaching 7.5 points in the regulation 14 games, the champion will walk away with $1.3 million (Rs. 11 crore), while the runner-up will receive $1.2 million (Rs. 10 crore). However, if the match is tied after 14 games, a tiebreaker scheduled for December 13 will determine the winner, with the same prize distribution.
The highly anticipated contest will run until December 12 unless one player achieves the decisive score of 7.5 points earlier. Thursday marks the first rest day of the championship, giving both competitors a chance to recalibrate before the battle resumes.
