Sangma outlined the project’s current status, noting that two EMRS have been completed, and some are in advanced stages.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday informed that the state government is taking steps to complete the construction of the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS).
Sangma informed that only two out of the proposed 38 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) in Meghalaya have been completed to date. He assured that the state government is dedicated to speeding up the construction of these schools, aimed at empowering marginalized communities, especially the Scheduled Tribes.
Sangma outlined the project’s current status, noting that two EMRS have been completed, and some are in advanced stages.
Looking ahead, Sangma expressed confidence, stating that he expects significant developments within the next year.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said, “Out of 38 EMRS, 2 have been completed already and some are already in the advanced stage. 22-25 are yet to be started but I am sure in the days to come, we will move faster.”
He said, “I expect in the next one year time, we will see things happening.”
The EMRS initiative started in 1997-98 by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, received a major boost in 2018-2019 when the Centre approved a substantial amount of funding. Despite this funding, progress has been limited, with completed schools only in Samanda (East Garo Hills) and Nongpoh (Ri Bhoi district).
Sangma further explained that the state government has now taken over the construction from the Manipur Tribal Development Corporation (MTDC), which previously handled the project. Addressing challenges, he pointed out that certain EMRS projects are encountering land-related issues.
“We have instructed the deputy commissioners and concerned officials and BDOs to sort out the issues because the ministry asks for free-of-cost land but here land belongs to the people so it is difficult to get free-of-cost land. The state government is taking responsibility in sorting out this issue,” he added.
