AICC today appointed Jorhat MP and Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi as the President of Assam Congress.
In a big announcement just ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, All India Congress Committee (AICC) today appointed Jorhat MP and Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi as the President of Assam Congress. He will replace Bhupen Bora.
This big announcement comes even as Gaurav Gogoi is in the middle of an intense row that is going on between him and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
43-year-old Gogoi, son of three time Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, expressed his gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal and said he will “seek the blessings of the people of Assam” as he takes over as the new President and carries on with his work to make to “create a better future” for the state.
Gogoi in his post on X wrote, “I am grateful to Congress President Shri @kharge ji , LOP Shri @RahulGandhi ji, GSO Shri @kcvenugopalmp ji and GS Shri @JitendraSAlwar ji for trusting me with this responsibility. Former PCC President Shri @BhupenKBorah led the party from the front and made a tremendous contribution. I would not have been here without the guidance of my parents and the support of my family especially my wife and children. It is a blessing to work with so many dedicated and inspiring senior leaders and workers in the Congress party in Assam. Their wisdom, experience and dedication to the party has taught me many things. I look forward to work with my seniors and colleagues. In the days to come I will seek the blessings of the people of Assam. I am confident that together we can create a better future for our state. Joi Ai Axom ! Jai Hind !”
Making the announcement, the AICC in a press release, appreciated the contributions of outgoing President Bhupen Borah who would now be working as the Chairperson of Congress’ Campaign Committee.
AICC also announced the appointments of Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey and Pradip Sarkar as Working Presidents of Assam Congress.
In other announcements, AICC appointed Debabrata Saikia as Chairman of Coordination Committee, Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi as Chairman of Manifesto Committee, Ripun Bora as Chairman of Election Management Committee, and Rakibul Hussain as the Chairman of Publicity Committee.
