Gauhati University marks scam: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu says had opposed 3rd-party involvement

Minister Ranoj Pegu suggested Gauhati University to adopt Samarth e-Gov portal

Just a day after the massive marks scam rocked Gauhati University, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu dropped a bombshell today.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Minister Ranoj Pegu said that he had strongly objected to third-party involvement in the Gauhati University examination and marks entry process and had asked them to disengage the vendor from Delhi and handle it themselves.

“Two years ago, I received a lot of complaints from students about the results of certain university examinations were not announced on time. T students were facing difficulties getting their mark sheets and other certificates and were unable to enroll in other higher education programs. When I visited the university and enquired about the procedure and system they were using to give the results and mark sheets, I learned that they were depending on a Delhi-based third-party vendor. Upon enquiring about their expedite, I was not satisfied, therefore I suggested the university to disengage the vendor from Delhi and handle it themselves.”

Minister Ranoj Pegu suggested Gauhati University to adopt Samarthe-Gov portal, a Union Education Ministry initiative that offers more than 40 software modules for the management of a variety of workflows across five critical functional domains of university operations and administration, including admissions.

“The Education Department has taken a decision that all the colleges/universities should be on board the Samarth e-Gov portal. Last year, we completed all admissions through this portal. Dibrugarh University even announced results on the portal. I have recently learned that the university will now go completely paperless from next year. All mark sheets and certificates will be uploaded on DigiLocker, another platform run by the government of India to secure, share and verification of documents and certificates. Therefore, universities and schools should no longer be dependent on the kind of system that Gauhati University is following. Access to the examination department should be restricted to authorized individuals only. It should be private, and the mark sheet, certificates, and other materials should be uploaded straight into the DigiLocker so that this type of scam can not happen. Students can open an account and download the file once DigiLocker has protected it,” the Education Minister added.
