GU Exam Controller Removed: The move comes after a violent protest by students demanding his removal over allegations of misconduct.
After high drama outside the Vice Chancellor’s office and intense protests by students yesterday, the Gauhati University authorities on Friday removed Dr Kandarpa Sarma from his position as the Exam Controller.
The move comes after a violent protest by students demanding his removal over allegations of misconduct and misbehavior.
The protests erupted on March 27 when students, led by the Postgraduate Students’ Union (PGSU) and the Law College Students’ Union, gathered at the university premises to voice their grievances.
The agitation was sparked by allegations that Dr Sarma had misbehaved with students who approached him regarding issues with exam results.
According to reports, a group of students, including the former General Secretary of PGSU, Nayanjyoti Gogoi, had gone to meet Dr Sarma for an official discussion.
However, before they could enter his office, Dr. Sarma reportedly hurled abuses at them, labeling Gogoi as a “broker” and “sycophant” and forcibly removing him from the premises.
Students claim this was not an isolated incident. Several complaints have surfaced alleging that Dr Sarma had previously mistreated students, researchers, and even the current Students’ Union General Secretary. Frustrated by repeated instances of alleged misconduct, students took to the university grounds, raising slogans and staging demonstrations outside the Vice Chancellor’s office.
During the height of the protest, Vice Chancellor Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta emerged from his office in an attempt to appease the agitated students and try find a solution. But things took a turn for the worse and VC Dr Mahanta lost his calm when students tried to heckle and abuse him.
