Gangtok Woman Scammed Out of Rs 5.35 Lakh by Online Fraudster Posing as Australian

On February 22, Khurana informed Lamichaney that he had been detained at an Indian airport due to incomplete documentation.
Sadar Police Station in Gangtok has registered a case against unknown individuals involved in an online scam that resulted in a woman losing Rs 5.35 lakh. The case, filed under multiple sections, including Section 66D of the IT Act, 2000.
The victim, reported that her ordeal began on February 17, 2025, when she received a friend request on Facebook from a person named Raj Khurana, who claimed to be living in Australia. After accepting the request, Lamichaney started communicating with Khurana via WhatsApp.
On February 22, Khurana informed Lamichaney that he had been detained at an Indian airport due to incomplete documentation. He then requested financial assistance to resolve the situation. Believing his story, Lamichaney transferred a total of Rs 5,35,000 through an IJPI transaction, convinced that the money would help secure his release.
Unfortunately, Lamichaney later realised that she had fallen victim to a fraudulent scheme. Authorities have since launched an investigation and are actively working to trace the culprits responsible for this scam.
