To reduce traffic near schools, the Education Department has also changed the operating hours for schools in the GMC area.
The Sikkim government has announced new traffic measures, including an odd-even vehicle system and changes to school schedules within the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) area, effective immediately to tackle traffic congestion.
The Transport Department has introduced an odd-even rule to limit non-essential vehicle movement. Private and government vehicles will only be allowed on the roads according to the last digit of their license plates.
Odd-numbered vehicles (ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) can operate on odd dates. Even-numbered vehicles (ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) can operate on even dates. These restrictions will apply on the National Highway from Mayfair Fatak to GICI, Zero Point, during restricted hours 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the exemption period is from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
According to the government order certain vehicles are exempt, including ambulances, police, fire tenders, essential services, senior government officials’ vehicles, tourist vehicles from outside Sikkim, media vehicles, two-wheelers, and taxis. Violations will result in fines under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
To reduce traffic near schools, the Education Department has also changed the operating hours for schools in the GMC area.
Government schools will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Private schools must start by 8:00 a.m. and end between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., depending on their schedules.
This adjustment affects several institutions, including Deorali Girls Senior Secondary School (SSS), West Point SSS, Modern SSS, and private schools like Holy Cross SSS and St. Thomas School.
Local authorities, including the District Collector and Superintendent of Police, will oversee the implementation of these changes to ensure smooth operations and reduce traffic during peak hours.
