Imphal’s famous Khwairamband Ima Keithel, also known as the Ima Market, is known across the globe for being run entirely by women vendors. Tourists from India and abroad visit this historic market to experience its unique charm. But behind its popularity lies a serious problem, lack of cleanliness and proper waste management.

For years, several spots around the market have become dumping grounds for vegetable waste and other discarded items. The strong smell from these areas often makes it difficult for people to even pass by. What’s worse, stray animals like cows, dogs and the endangered Manipuri Pony feed on this rotting waste, posing a threat to their health.

“Yes, waste is expected in a market. But it must be disposed of responsibly,” says Ngangom Uttam, Director of Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD), speaking to Northeast Live. “Keeping the city clean is not just the government’s duty. The public must also take responsibility.”

“We want to replicate this success in other garbage-prone areas across the state,” said Director Uttam. “We haven’t identified the next locations yet, but the plan is in motion.”

In a positive turn, a site once known for garbage dumping, opposite Lai Eshingchaiba near Nagamapal has been transformed into a beautiful “Senior Citizens’ Recreation Point”. Developed by the Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) under the 15th Central Finance Commission (Tied Fund), this initiative is part of the Clean Imphal Campaign aimed at reclaiming and beautifying urban spaces.

The new recreation park was inaugurated on Friday and is already drawing attention for the right reasons. A board reads: “My City My Responsibility,” reminding people that change is possible.

Director Uttam further said, the government is also planning a unique initiative to address waste at Ima Market and its surrounding area itself. Every morning, Imphal Municipal Council staff will distribute dustbin bags to the women street vendors. Each vendor may have to deposit a refundable fee of Rs. 50 while taking the bag. Once they return the bag filled with properly segregated waste, they will get a refund after a small deduction around Rs. 10 for maintenance.

“This small step can bring a big change,” Director added. “Right now, vendors arrive early and clean vegetables at their stalls, often dumping the waste nearby. These little habits are turning the market area into a waste zone.”

Efforts to clean up other garbage hotspots across the state are also gaining ground. However, a major hurdle remains the public’s habit of throwing garbage into drains, rivers, and streets.

Authorities believe the solution lies in shared responsibility. “Blaming the government or blaming the people won’t work,” Uttam said. “Everyone has a role to play. The city can only stay clean if we all take ownership.”

With the Clean Imphal Campaign gaining momentum and public support growing, the hope is that more parts of the city will soon follow the example set by Nagamapal, where a garbage dump has now bloomed into a space for joy and peace.
