Apple Inc. has appointed Moradabad-born Sabih Khan as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), making him one of the top Indian-origin executives in the global technology space. His appointment places him alongside the likes of Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, and Indra Nooyi, people of Indian origin who are heading or have headed global giants Google, Microsoft, and PepsiCo respectively.
Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the appointment on Tuesday, praising Khan as “a brilliant strategist” and “one of the central architects of Apple’s supply chain.” Cook also highlighted Khan’s role in advancing Apple’s sustainability goals, reducing the company’s carbon footprint by over 60 percent.
“He leads with heart and strong values. I know he will make an exceptional COO,” Cook said in an official statement.Born in 1966 in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Khan spent his early years at the historic Mohammad Yar Khan ‘kothi’ in the city’s Civil Lines area. That very building now houses a mini-mall, a shopping complex, and a school.
His relatives, who still live in part of the original property, expressed joy and pride over his rise to one of the highest positions at Apple.Khan moved to Singapore as a child, where he completed his schooling. He later pursued dual bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from Tufts University in the US. He also holds a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).Before joining Apple in 1995, Khan worked at GE Plastics in Cupertino as an applications development engineer and a key account technical leader.
At Apple, he steadily climbed the ranks and most recently served as the Senior Vice President of Operations. He has been instrumental in managing Apple’s complex global supply chain and delivering some of the company’s most iconic products. His promotion comes just as Apple prepares to launch the much-anticipated iPhone 17 and after reports of the company shifting its supply chain away from China. The people of Uttar Pradesh, especially Moradabad, are celebrating Khan’s achievement as a proud moment for India, marking the rise of another Indian name on the global tech map.
