From cricketer to footballer to Everester, meet Arunachal’s Kabak Yano, 5th woman from the state to scale Mt Everest

A former state-level woman cricketer and a mountaineer from Arunachal Pradesh, Kabak Yano made her name in history by becoming the first woman from the Nyishi tribe and the fifth woman from Arunachal Pradesh to scale the world’s highest peak at 8,848.86 meters on Tuesday.

As per inputs, she reached the summit at 11:50 am, on Tuesday (May 21) along with fellow climbers Babu Sherpa, Ngima Dorjee Sherpa, Subash Rai, Lakpa Nurbu Sherpa, and Shere Sherpa from Nepal.

Yano, a native of Kamle district, become the youngest female from the Northeastern region of the country to achieve this monumental feat.

Yano has completed the basic mountaineering course from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling, the Advanced Mountaineering Course, and the Search and Rescue Course from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang.

Besides her mountaineering achievements, Yano is also known for her contributions to sports. Earlier, Yano has represented the Arunachal cricket team in the first-class domestic season, playing in the Women’s U-23 T20 League (Plate Group) in New Delhi during the 2018-19 seasons.

Yano has also showcased her skills on the football field as well, representing Kamle district in various tournaments.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to his X account to congratulate the mountaineer on her achievement. He wrote, “Congratulations to Kabak Yano from Kamle district for her incredible achievement of summiting Mt Everest! Her journey from Arunachal Pradesh to the world’s highest peak is a testament to her dedication and perseverance.”

“From completing rigorous mountaineering courses to her success in scaling Mt UT Kangri and nearly conquering Mt Nun, Yano’s accomplishment is truly inspiring.Best wishes for your future endeavors, Yano! Keep inspiring us all.” he added.
