Four New Ministers Inducted into Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Cabinet Ahead of 2026 Polls

Four new faces were inducted into the Assam Cabinet today, ahead of the 2026 Assembly Elections. MLAs Rupesh Gowala, Krishnendu Paul, Prasanta Phukan, and Kaushik Rai took the oath of office and secrecy at a formal ceremony held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati. The oath was administered by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

While the portfolios for the new ministers are yet to be announced, the induction of Krishnendu Paul and Kaushik Rai, both representing the Barak Valley region, has drawn particular attention.

Earlier, Sanjoy Kisan, the MLA from Tinsukia, resigned as Minister for Labour and Tea Tribes Welfare.

Today’s induction takes the total strength of the Himanta Biswa Cabinet to its full strength of 18.

Know About the New Ministers

Prasanta Phukan (MLA, Dibrugarh): A seasoned politician, Phukan has been elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly four times in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. He won the 2021 election with an impressive margin of 38,005 votes.

Kaushik Rai (MLA, Lakhipur): Representing the Lakhipur constituency, Rai secured his victory in the 2021 elections. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Gurucharan College and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Assam University.

Krishnendu Paul (MLA, Patharkandi): A two-time legislator, Paul was first elected in 2016 and retained his seat in 2021, representing the Patharkandi constituency.

Rupesh Gowala (MLA, Doom Dooma): A first-time MLA, Gowala won the Doom Dooma seat in the 2021 elections and now makes his debut as a cabinet minister.

The reshuffle is seen as a strategic step to ensure better representation of regions like the Barak Valley and to address evolving political dynamics within the state.
