Former Tripura Minister and sitting MLA Surajit Dutta passes away, one-day state mourning declared

Former Tripura Minister and sitting BJP MLA, Surjit Dutta passed away in Kolkata last night. He was 73.

Dutta was the MLA from Ramnagar assembly seat. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Kolkata.

Dutta had been ill for a long period and was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Tripura. On December 26, he was shifted to a hospital in Kolkata after his health condition deteriorated.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, and brothers.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha condoled the demise of the senior political leader and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.

CM Saha said that Dutta’s demise is an irreparable loss to the state’s political arena.

TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma also condoled the death of Dutta.

Taking to X, he wrote,”

My heartfelt condolences to the family members of our Former Colleague and MLA Surjit Datta on his passing away .He worked with my parents and also with me during his reign as a congress member , may his soul rest in peace . Om Shanti.”

Tripura Government has announced one-day state mourning today as a mark of respect to Dutta.

The veteran leader joined BJP before the 2018 Assembly elections. Prior to that he was with the Congress. He served as a Cabinet Minister in the Congress-led coalition government between 1988 and 1993.

Dutta won the Ramnagar seat, his home constituency continuously since 1988 losing just once in 2013.
