Biren Singh mentioned that the Electoral Verification Programme in 2019 identified and removed 67,844 fake voters.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has called for a strong mechanism to filter out fake Aadhaar holders during the voter registration process. He welcomed the Election Commission’s decision to link Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) with Aadhaar, terming it a significant move to enhance electoral transparency and prevent malpractices.

In a post on X, Biren Singh wrote, “This step, backed by constitutional provisions and Supreme Court judgments, is crucial for maintaining the integrity of voter rolls. However, while implementing this, a robust mechanism must be in place to filter out fake Aadhaar holders, as past instances have shown Aadhaar misuse for illegal voter registration.”

He stressed the need for thorough verification to eliminate fake entries. “A detailed verification process, cross-checking government records, and on-ground scrutiny should be prioritized to remove fraudulent entries while safeguarding the rights of genuine voters,” he added.

Highlighting measures taken during his tenure, Biren Singh mentioned that the Electoral Verification Programme in 2019 identified and removed 67,844 fake voters, including 24,636 from a single district. He said this reflects the urgency of having strict verification to ensure only genuine Aadhaar holders are linked to voter IDs.

Biren Singh said that maintaining the integrity of voter registration is essential for protecting democracy and ensuring fair elections.
