Fmr Manipur CM Ibobi Singh Criticises Centre Over President’s Rule in Manipur, Calls It a ‘Wrong Policy’

Ibobi stated that this decision would only exacerbate the suffering of the people, who have already faced violence and unrest since May 3.

Former Manipur Chief Minister and Congress legislature party leader Okram Ibobi Singh has strongly condemned the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, labeling it as a wrong policy by the BJP-led central government. During a press conference at Congress Bhavan, Ibobi stated that this decision would only exacerbate the suffering of the people, who have already faced violence and unrest since May 3, 2023.

He expressed disappointment with the central government’s attitude towards the people of Manipur. If the government were genuinely committed to finding a solution, it could do so in a very short time frame. He pointed out that just before the commencement of the state assembly’s budget session, the Home Minister called Chief Minister Biren Singh to New Delhi, after which he resigned only hours later. Ibobi argued that this approach is intolerable and suggested it was a premeditated decision. He said that if resignation were in the best interest of the people, it should have occurred at least one to two weeks before the assembly’s budget session. The central government, he insisted, needs to respect the people’s mandate.

Despite the BJP being in power at both the Centre and the state, Ibobi criticises their choice to impose President’s Rule rather than seek a democratic solution. He stated that both the people of Manipur and the Congress party oppose President’s Rule and advocate for solutions through an elected government. He stressed that the territorial integrity and unity of Manipur must be preserved under all circumstances.

Additionally, he alleged that although the official notification of President’s Rule was issued only yesterday, the central government had been informally controlling the state from the onset of the crisis.
