First-Ever Log Drum Pulling Ceremony of Tikhir Tribe at Hornbill Festival 2024 Marks Historic Milestone

In a historic first, the Tikhir tribe of Nagaland held its first-ever Log Drum Pulling Ceremony on the third day of the ongoing 25th Hornbill Festival 2024.

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Minister Temjen Imna Along also participated in the ceremony celebrating Nagaland’s youngest tribe Tikhir tribe.

This landmark moment for the Tikhir tribe is especially significant as the tribe was officially recognized in 2022. 2024 marks the tribe’s second year of participation in the Hornbill Festival, solidifying their place as a major player in the cultural fabric of the state.

Taking to X, Minister Temjen Imna Along said, “25 years of rhythm, and today a NEW beat echoes—Tikhir Tribe’s Log Drum Pulling makes history! Delighted to experience the vibrant 25th Hornbill Festival, marked by the first-ever Log Drum Pulling Ceremony of the Tikhir Tribe, a tradition of unity and strength. Had the pleasure of celebrating with Shri @gssjodhpur
ji, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism of India, and Shri Tshering Thendup Bhutia ji, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Sikkim.”

The 25th Hornbill Festival that began on December 1 has already seen over 40,000 visitors soaking in the tradition and culture, tastes, sounds and colours of Nagaland, which is in full display at the festival.

Not just Naga tribes, but tribal troupes from other Northeastern states have participated in the festival and given spirited performances.

Today also the day turned out to be action-packed as several colourful performances were given by the cultural troupes giving visitors a peek into the Naga culture and way of life.

The Festival will conclude on December 10.
