Firecrackers cause fire in Dibrugarh-Lalgarh Express

One person was carrying firecrackers illegally which caught fire while he was smoking a cigarette resulting in the fire inside the train full of passengers

It was a narrow escape for the hundreds of passengers on board the Dibrugarh-Lalgarh Express when some firecrackers being carried illegally by a passenger went off inside the train causing a fire. The incident took place when the train was at Bareilly junction in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

The fire broke out in a general coach of the Dibrugarh-Lalgarh Express.

There was panic among passengers with some even jumping out of the coach to save themselves. Few passengers are said to have received minor injuries in the incident.

“The blaze broke out in the S2 coach of Dibrugarh-Lalgarh Express. The passenger sitting on seats number 55 and 56 of this coach was carrying firecrackers illegally. The explosive material must have caught fire while he smoked a cigarette,” Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Chandra Mohan Sharma said.

“As soon as we received information we rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control using fire extinguishers,” he said.

No casualties have been reported in the incident, he added.

Earlier, on February 9, 2023, an AC coach of the Awadh-Assam Express caught fire near Ramdayalu station in Muzaffarpur. Passengers pulled the chain to stop the train. Coach caught fire was first seen by the workers working on the railway track and they started shouting.

However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
