Farmer Shot in Paddy Field at Phubala Amid Ongoing Ethnic Tensions in Manipur

Tensions continue to prevail in the region, with farmers fearing for their safety while tending to their fields.
A farmer identified as 60-year-old Ningthoujam Biren was shot today afternoon while he was working in his paddy field at Phubala in Bishnupur district of Manipur. He sustained injury on his left arm and was rushed to the Bishnupur District Hospital.
Soon after the incident, security forces rushed to the site to prevent any further escalation. However, the identity of the shooter remains unknown.
Locals suspect the gunfire came from the nearby hills. Speaking to Northeast Live, the injured farmer Biren stated, “I thought the gunshots were coming from the nearby stream and heard approximately five rounds of fire. The area along the stream is bushy and elevated compared to the paddy field. I was working in the field with some SSB personnel who have been deployed here to ensure the safety of the farmers.”
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the state since May 3, 2023. Recently, on June 15, clashes broke out at Leitanpokpi, a sensitive area on the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts, after villagers from Kuki and Meitei communities reportedly started pelting stones and using slingshots against each other.
Eyewitnesses said a group of villagers from Kangpokpi descended on the farmlands in Leitanpokpi and forcibly stopped farmers from carrying out cultivation. The situation quickly escalated into verbal altercations and violent clashes.
Joint teams of security forces were deployed to control the mob. They used tear gas shells and smoke bombs to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
Tensions continue to prevail in the region, with farmers fearing for their safety while tending to their fields.
