Explosive: Illegal Bangladeshis and Rohongiyas Residing in Meghalaya, CoMSO & HYC Demands STF to Detect and Deport

Several individuals were found to be living without proper documentation

Meghalaya pressure groups, Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Wednesday made an explosive statement that not only illegal Bangladeshi immigrants but, Rohingyas from Myanmar are also residing in Meghalaya and demanded immediate formation of a dedicated Special Task Force (STF) in every district to identify, verify, and act against suspected illegal settlers.

CoMSO Chairman and HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem flagged the issue after a field inspection at the Lum Survey area, where several individuals were found to be living without proper documentation. Synrem stated that the citizenship status of the individuals detected during field visit remains unclear and some could potentially be Rohingyas. Synrem alleged that despite raising the concerns, the state government has yet to initiate any comprehensive verification process.

CoMSO also expressed concern that the government appears to be relying solely on public tip-offs rather than deploying an independent mechanism to detect illegal immigrants. The group argued that in areas dominated by such populations, expecting locals to report members of their own community is both unrealistic and unsafe.

It may be noted that the HYC on May 21 pushed back migrant workers engaged at various project sites in New Shillong Township. Members of the HYC conducted its self-sanctioned checking of construction sites and said from over 400 migrant workers, 200 were working without a registration card from the labour department. According to the HYC, some of the workers have brought their family to reside at the construction sites while others could produce only the acknowledge slip of registration.
