Ex-Mizoram govt officials convicted in graft case fined, given jail term

Two former Mizoram government officials – Dr N Pallai, the then Mission Director of National Rural Health Mission, Aizawl and Lalsangliana Chhakchhuak, the then Executive Engineer, PWD who were convicted in a graft case have been given jail term of 4 year and a fine of Rs 24 lakh and a jail term of one year and fine of Rs 6 lakh respectively.
They were found guilty of misappropriating funds worth Rs convicted both the officials (approx) that was approved for upgradation of Civil Hospital, Aizawl.
A Special Court had convicted both the former officials on May 12 and the sentences were announced today. The case was being handled by CBI since January, 2014.
The State Health department had received Rs 10 crore from the Centre for the upgradation of the Civil Hospital but the probe revealed that only Rs 4.26 crore was utilized.
Dr N Pallai is said to have flouted norms, did not obtain administrative approvals from the competent authorities before diverting funds for other purpose and abused his official position. The probe further established that he had issued fake work orders and accepted bills with forged signatures.
In the case of Lalsangliana Chhakchhuak, the charge sheet said that the former Executive Engineer posted at the Directorate of Health Services during the same period, had entered into criminal conspiracy and in pursuance of that conspiracy caused wrongful loss to the Government to the tune of Rs 29,48,819 and corresponding gain to themselves.
