Eminent Assamese Writer, Poet and Singer Dr Lakshahira Das Passes Away at 94

Well-known litterateur, lyricist, poet, and singer of yesteryears, Dr Lakshahira Das is no more.
Dr Das passed away in the early hours of Saturday at her residence in Guwahati’s Rajgarh. She was 94.

Extending his condolences to the bereaved family members of Dr Das, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned her invaluable contribution to the state’s cultural and literary space.

“Dr Lakshahira Das baidew will be remembered for her invaluable contribution in enriching Assam’s cultural & literary landscape. She worked tirelessly for the empowerment of women and her works will inspire generations to come. My thoughts are with her family and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” the CM wrote.


Born on February 13, 1931, in Sualkuchi, Lakshahira Das was the first female artist to receive All India Radio’s approval as a lyricist, composer and singer in 1948.

She was also an educationist. She was the first professor and Head of the newly founded Education Department of Cotton College from 1957 to 1977. She retired as the Head Professor of the Department of Education of Gauhati University in 1993.

Over her six-decade-long career, she wrote close to 2,000 songs and sang songs written by legendary writers like Ambikagiri Ray Choudhury and Nalini Bala Devi.

She is survived by her three sons – Dr Abhinandan Das, well-known paediatrician, Amlandeep Das, former Head of Department of English, Cotton College and Anirban Das, well known ghazal singer.
