MLA RG Momin's revelation sparks concern over access to education for economically backward children

In a startling disclosure, Rambrai Jyrngam’s Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), RG Momin, has raised an alarm about the dire state of the education system in the state.

Momin revealed that numerous villages, including some within his constituency, are grappling with the absence of government schools.

Momin’s statement has shed light on a pressing issue that has gone unnoticed for far too long. According to him, the absence of new schools in Meghalaya has emerged as a significant concern, leaving several villages without educational institutions. He pointed out that a standing order issued by the government in 2011 has further aggravated the problem by restricting the establishment of new schools in villages. As a result, an estimated 10 to 15 villages are at risk of being devoid of any educational facilities.

Highlighting the severity of the issue, Momin disclosed that he has personally identified over 30 villages where government schools are conspicuously absent.

One of the most troubling aspects of this predicament is the impact on children from economically backward families. Momin emphasized that private schools do exist in some of these villages; however, the cost associated with private education poses a significant barrier for many underprivileged children. As a result, the absence of government schools further perpetuates educational inequities, limiting opportunities for those who are already marginalized.
