Additionally, the ED found Rs 65.54 lakh in her bank account, which she could not account for through legal sources.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Guwahati Zonal Office, has attached movable and immovable properties worth Rs 7.33 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in a case involving disproportionate assets against Sukanya Bora, the former Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) of Kamrup (Metropolitan), Assam.
In a release the ED said that it launched its investigation based on an FIR registered by the Vigilance Police Station, CM’s Special Vigilance Cell, Assam, against Sukanya Bora. The case was filed under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for possessing assets far beyond her known sources of income.
According to the chargesheet filed by the CM’s Special Vigilance Cell, during the check period from March 1, 2017, to February 28, 2023, Sukanya Bora possessed disproportionate assets amounting to Rs 8.14 crore.
The ED’s financial investigation revealed that around Rs 98.66 lakh in cash was deposited into the bank accounts of Sukanya Bora and her parents, who had no legitimate income sources to support these transactions. The ED further found that she purchased three properties in the form of land in the names of her parents and a close relative. Out of the total investment, she paid Rs 3.25 crore in cash, while the rest came from the Proceeds of Crime (POC) deposited in bank accounts.
To conceal the origins of the illegal wealth, Bora layered the transactions. One of the properties initially purchased in the name of a close relative was later transferred to her father without any monetary exchange. Later, her father transferred one of the properties to her through a gift deed.
Additionally, the ED found Rs 65.54 lakh in her bank account, which she could not account for through legal sources.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the ED continues to probe deeper into the case.
