Easing travel to Bhutan: Tourism Dept lifts mandatory travel insurance for tourists

With an improvement in the Covid situation and as part of the efforts to ensure smoother travel experiences, the department decided to remove this requirement
Now travel to Bhutan with ease. Bhutan’s Department of Tourism has decided to remove the mandatory travel insurance requirement for tourists. A move that is expected to come as a huge relief to many from India and other countries wanting to visit the picturesque Himalayan nation.
The mandatory travel insurance was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide coverage for unforeseen emergencies, particularly medical expenses related to the pandemic.
Now with an improvement in the situation and as part of the efforts to ensure smoother travel experiences, the department has decided to do away with this requirement.
While the mandatory requirement for travel insurance has been withdrawn for visa processing, the department still encourages tourists to possess travel insurance as a precautionary measure. This is to ensure they are adequately covered in case of any unlikely emergencies associated with international travel.
In 2023, 3.04 lakh tourists visited Bhutan, of which 72,659 were Indians. In 2019, of the 3.15 lakh tourists, 2.30 lakh were Indians. This is as per Bhutan PMO data.
