Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain Faces Backlash Amid Public Outcry Over Assam’s Beef Ban

"We thought Rakibul Hussain would speak for us Muslims and support us, but it turned out to be the opposite," said a local.
The Assam Government’s decision to ban the consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants, and public places has sparked widespread public outrage, particularly targeting Dhubri Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain.
Many believe that Hussain’s recent comments may have influenced the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government to impose the controversial ban.
People in Dhubri have reacted strongly, even going as far as to ban the entry of MP Rakibul Hussain into the area.
Locals blame him for making irresponsible remarks that they believe led to the decision, and protests have been staged against the Dhubri MP.
Speaking to the media, a local said, “We thought Rakibul Hussain would speak for us Muslims and support us, but it turned out to be the opposite. He is against us. The decision to ban beef in restaurants and hotels in Assam was not made by the Assam Government; it was Rakibul Hussain who decided this in New Delhi.”
Rakibul Hussain also a long-time MLA from Samaguri, is facing intense backlash in his home constituency. People in the Samaguri constituency, where Hussain has been elected MLA for 5 consecutive terms, are now calling for a boycott of the Congress leader, particularly in the sandbar areas.
“We help Rakibul win the election from Dhubri Lok Sabha seat by 10 lakh votes, next time he will not get even 500 votes,” said another local.
Not only this, people in Juria who are voters in the Samaguri constituency had demanded that the Congress leader seek an apology from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as well as the common people.
Rakibul Hussain recently alleged that BJP distributed beef to win the Muslim-dominated Samaguri constituency during the recently-held byelection.
Fumed over such baseless allegations, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had dared the Congress to submit a written request, seeking a beef ban.
Meanwhile, AIUDF leader Champak Kalita accused the Assam Government of trying to hide its inefficiencies through decisions such as banning beef.
BJP MP Dilip Saikia, meanwhile, said that there is nothing communal about the decision.
Union Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita echoed similar sentiments.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday announced a statewide ban on serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels and public places.
The decision was taken at a state cabinet meeting to amend the existing law on beef consumption to incorporate the new provisions.
