Devp at the cost of debt is not progress: Tipra Motha target Manik Govt

Tripura Leader of Opposition Animesh Debbarma said that the government must work on revenue income to realise the dream of making Tripura self reliant
The Opposition TIPRA Motha in Tripura has hit out at the Manik Saha government for allegedly failing to check the rising amount debt burden on the state and adopting policies for increasing revenue income of the state. Expressing serious discontent, Leader of Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly Animesh Debbarma said that development at the cost of debt cannot be defined as progress.
According to Debbarma, there is a sharp spike in figures as the state’s debt stood at Rs 13,000 crore when the BJP came to power in the state in 2018. However, the numbers have gone beyond Rs 21,000 crore now, Debbarma stated.
Addressing the motion of Governor’s address at the Assembly, Debbarma said, “In 2018 when BJP came to power, they spoke about making Tripura ‘Atma Nirbhar’ (Self Reliant). What does that mean? It means without bringing funds from the Centre, we want to run Tripura on it’s own revenue income. I remember that in the month of September, the Finance Minister of our state during a press briefing had spoken about the economic status of our state. As per the information available with us the state debt I am sure it was somewhere nearly Rs 13000 crore till BJP came to power, but this amount has now gone upto nearly Rs 21,000 to Rs 22,000 crore.”
Debbarma questioned the lack of new revenue sources, emphasizing that without creating additional streams of income, the vision of an Atma Nirbhar Tripura (Self-Reliant Tripura) remains elusive.
